The Knowledge-based AEI, which is co-managed by the CTIC Technology Centre and the ICT Cluster of Asturias, is a non-profit commercial association made up of non-profit companies and organisations that carry out research activities in the so-called knowledge society sector. It is supported by the Economic Development Institute of the Principality of Asturias (IDEPA) and its main goal is to encourage innovation and the application of new technologies in the field of knowledge, as well as in secondary or complementary activities related to this field, by involving its members in collaborative exchange processes aimed at obtaining advantages and/or benefits from the carrying out of joint projects of an innovative nature.

The Knowledge-based AEI was set up in order to encourage technological development, innovation, knowledge management and applied research in the knowledge society sector, although it can also carry out other activities directly related or connected to the former:

• Involve AEI’s members in collaborative exchange processes aimed at obtaining advantages and/or benefits from the carrying out of joint projects of an innovative nature.
• Improve the products and services provided by its members through the adoption of viable technology strategies and a shared commitment to innovation, by leveraging the advances of knowledge society and the advantages offered by economies of scale in order to establish a critical mass, thus improving productivity and boosting the competitiveness of member companies.
• Legitimately assert and defend the interests of its members when faced with public authorities.
• Through a business consortium aimed at the promotion, funding, development and application of new technological and innovation processes that help improve the financial results of its members.

In order to do that, the AEI sets out to contribute to the growth and expansion of its members through the adoption of collaborative strategies aimed at encouraging research, the establishing of new technologies and the implementation of innovative solutions within their respective business fields in order to increase productivity and improve competitiveness by boosting their economic viability and impact on the market at both national and international levels.
